Trump rejects Iran’s seven-day Hormuz plan, expects talks next week

President Donald Trump said he expects more negotiations with Iran in the coming week after rejecting Tehran’s seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Two regional sources told Axios a new round of indirect talks could begin as early as Monday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran sent the plan to Washington through Qatar. It proposed reopening the strait after seven days if the US first met certain conditions; the Wall Street Journal reported these included lifting the US naval blockade.

US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said Washington rejected the plan because Tehran demanded the lifting of sweeping sanctions and access to frozen assets worth billions of dollars. He said Iran wanted those demands met before entering negotiations; Trump said the US blockade was intended to cut off Iran’s energy-export revenue.
