Waltz says Trump rejected Iran peace offer over upfront sanctions relief

The Guardian

UN envoy Mike Waltz said Trump rejected Iran’s peace proposal because Tehran sought sanctions relief up front, promising to negotiate afterward. Waltz said Trump doubted Iran would negotiate in good faith to end its nuclear program.

Waltz said Tehran sought relief from sanctions being imposed under a US economic blockade intended to pressure Iran to stop attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. He also cited a failed 14-point US-Iran framework signed in Pakistan in June, saying Iran violated it by attacking international shipping; he said 146 nations had condemned the attacks.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said any reopening of the strait depended on Iran’s conditions and that diplomacy was the only way out of the deadlock. He said Iran was ready to resume fighting but remained prepared for diplomacy; President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran was open to talks on its nuclear program and other issues but would not accept coercion.
