Trump says he expects talks with Iran to continue this week, a day after rejecting a ceasefire offer. The Wall Street Journal reported the offer included opening the Strait of Hormuz, resuming nuclear talks and lifting the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports.
Trump told Axios Iran wants a deal, but not the one he wants, and said Tehran had “overplayed their hand.” The Wall Street Journal reported Trump was privately skeptical Iran would meet his demands. Asked whether he had considered renewed strikes, Trump said he was “always thinking about it” but did not commit to specific attacks.
Trump said the U.S. military was facilitating oil movement through Hormuz and claimed more than 20 million barrels had passed through since the war began in February. Last week, he called a U.S.-Iran meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly “very good,” but threatened to annihilate Iran in his address and later said on social media it could not have a nuclear weapon. Polls cited in the report showed higher gas prices linked to the war were a top issue ahead of November’s midterms.
