Donald Trump said he rejected Iran’s seven-day proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, calling it unacceptable and citing the US naval blockade’s economic pressure on Tehran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran sent the plan via Qatar.
Araghchi said the strait would reopen at the end of the seven-day plan if Washington accepted it. The Wall Street Journal reported that part of the proposal required the US to meet conditions first, including lifting its naval blockade.
Iran blocked shipping through the strait after the first US strikes in February, disrupting a large share of regional oil and gas deliveries and leading to significantly higher US fuel prices. The US imposed its own blockade on Iranian seaports; Trump said 29 ships had passed through the strait overnight.
