A memorial depicting two pupils embracing has been installed at Lord Mayor Treloar School near Alton, Hampshire, honouring boys with haemophilia who were infected with HIV and hepatitis after receiving contaminated blood treatments in the 1970s and 1980s.
The Infected Blood Public Inquiry’s 2024 report said “very few” pupils with haemophilia who attended between 1970 and 1987 escaped infection. It found NHS clinicians experimented on children without their knowledge despite knowing the risks. Of 122 pupils with haemophilia who attended, about 30 were alive when the report was published.
Former pupils said the memorial honours classmates who died and the bonds they formed at the school. They have sought legal action against the school’s trust in the High Court. A statement read on the trust’s behalf said it was sorry affected former pupils and their loved ones had suffered; more than £2bn has been paid to infected-blood victims across the UK.
