An explosion collapsed a three-storey building in Athens’s Plaka district, near the Acropolis, leaving at least one person dead and five missing. A woman’s body was found on Saturday morning; rescuers are still searching the rubble, with a gas leak suspected as the cause.
Local media said the building housed a holiday rental and reported that four US tourists, a British national and a Greek national were involved, but authorities had not confirmed that account. Reuters, citing local police, reported that tourists were confirmed missing after failing to arrive for a flight at Athens airport.
The blast damaged neighbouring buildings and scattered debris across the road. Emergency crews used excavators and thermal-imaging cameras to search for survivors.
