At Thursday’s White House dinner with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Donald Trump was joined by AMD’s Lisa Su, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Elon Musk and former Apple CEO Tim Cook. Tariffs, critical minerals and AI safety were on the agenda.
Washington and Beijing were negotiating amid a trade truce, with semiconductors also among the issues at stake. The US had proposed a channel for the two countries to notify each other about significant AI safety incidents, but it remained under discussion. Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos were also among the tech guests.
Altman and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg were seen talking. Altman has supported shared AI safety standards, including rules for when companies should slow or stop developing more powerful models. Zuckerberg has said AI labs have strong incentives to make safe models and can decide for themselves when to slow down.
