Jen Hamilton and North Carolina Sen. Woodson Bradley are backing a bill to cut the state's one-year divorce separation rule to six months, with waivers for domestic violence or childless, uncontested cases. They say the effort has drawn backlash.
Hamilton said that even if passed, the bill would not change the law in time to advance her own divorce from Brian Hamilton. In an Instagram video posted Sept. 24, she argued that the current rule has no exceptions for adultery or domestic violence.
Hamilton shared a constituent's voicemail to Bradley. The caller said divorce was biblically wrong, claimed the bill would make it easier for cheating spouses to “get away with it,” and threatened to defeat Bradley politically. Hamilton and Bradley said it was one of many such responses.
