Oklahoma State beat West Virginia 41-24 behind North Texas transfers Drew Mestemaker, Caleb Hawkins and Wyatt Young. Mestemaker threw for 389 yards and three touchdowns; Young caught eight passes for 192 yards and a score, while Hawkins ran 31 times for 180 yards and a TD.
The performance recalled Oklahoma State's original Triplets: quarterback Mike Gundy, running back Thurman Thomas and receiver Hart Lee Dykes, who starred in 1987. At North Texas last season, Mestemaker threw for 4,379 yards, Hawkins rushed for 1,434 yards and recorded 29 total touchdowns—a freshman FBS record—and Young caught 70 passes for 1,264 yards and 10 touchdowns.
The Sporting News said the win could move Oklahoma State into the AP Top 25; the Cowboys had been 30th in votes in the latest poll. They opened with a loss to Tulsa, then upset a top-10 Oregon team and beat Murray State.
