Three African giant pouched rats trained by nonprofit APOPO have moved into the Sacramento Zoo, which plans to feature them in visitor education programs. Demonstrations will show how they use scent to find specific items and navigate tight spaces.
Rats’ scent-detection work has helped identify tuberculosis infections and landmines, as well as trafficked wildlife products including elephant ivory, rhino horn, African blackwood, and giraffe hides and hair.
