Several thousand protested outside the U.N. General Assembly during Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s address, chanting that he should be arrested as a terrorist. Former U.S. officials urged tougher sanctions and support for internet freedom in Iran.
Retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg called for a secular, non-nuclear Iran. Former U.S. Ambassador Marc Ginsberg urged Congress to pass the Maximum Support Act, which would target Iran’s resources, confiscate government assets and support internet freedom so Iranians could organize and have a voice.
The rally was sponsored by the National Council of Resistance of Iran. Its president-elect, Maryam Rajavi, said Iranians rejected both religious and monarchical dictatorship. The article cited estimates that more than 20,000 people who protested in Iran earlier this year were killed by the government; it also said reports of executions of political prisoners continued weekly.
