Niger’s defence ministry says two attacks by a Sahel branch of Islamic State killed at least 57 security personnel on Wednesday: 38 soldiers at the Dabagu base in Tahoua and 19 gendarmes in Abala-Filingué. Several soldiers remain missing.
The report says the military junta, which took power in a 2023 coup, has struggled to contain Niger’s long-running jihadist conflict. Army dissatisfaction over heavy losses was said to be growing and led to an attempted mutiny in August, which the junta quelled after several hours.
