UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told Iran's Abbas Araghchi in New York on Thursday that Britain would not tolerate intimidation, threats or hostile activity on UK soil by Iran-linked groups. The Foreign Office said he set out measures the government had taken in response.
The Foreign Office said Miliband urged Iran to choose de-escalation and diplomacy rather than prolonging the Middle East war. It also said he reaffirmed Britain's resolve to combat threats from Iran-linked groups, including attacks on the British Jewish community. The pair discussed restoring freedom of navigation and fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz; the department said continued disruption affects global security and economic stability.
Miliband also raised Craig and Lindsay Foreman, from East Sussex, who were arrested by Iranian authorities in January last year while travelling through Iran on a motorcycle trip. They are being held at Tehran's Evin prison. He repeated the call for their immediate release, saying their welfare remains a government priority.
