Ten years after RAF gunner Corrie Mckeague vanished in Bury St Edmunds, his mother Nicola Urquhart says she has given herself closure, though his body was never recovered. A 2022 inquest concluded he died after climbing into a commercial bin tipped into a refuse lorry.
Urquhart and relatives had earlier accused Suffolk Police of failing to pursue leads, withholding information and ruling out third-party involvement too soon. She said officers privately apologized after the inquest and later said the force “got it right”; police say the inquiry is closed unless new, realistic and credible information emerges.
Urquhart says bins near where Mckeague vanished remain unlocked, despite an inquest recommendation for locks on large public bins. Biffa, which owned the bin, initially told police it weighed 11kg; it was later recorded at 116kg. The company says it has added warning signs, provides regular training and is committed to learning from the inquest.
