Taiwan's military demonstrated its new truck-mounted 105mm gun and showed other weapons to journalists at southern bases, a day before Xi Jinping was due to meet Donald Trump in Washington. The defence ministry said the tour was unrelated to the summit.
The 105mm mobile gun system can search for and attack multiple targets at once, the article's definition of its “hunter-killer” capability. It can penetrate 500mm of steel from 2km; Taiwan developed the gun, fire-control system and turret. HIMARS was also displayed.
Taiwan was awaiting $29.72bn in US military sales as of August, according to Taiwan Security Monitor. It had also been waiting months for a $14bn US package that includes missiles and air-defence systems; Beijing threatened to cancel the summit if Washington approved it. Maj Gen Chiao Fu-chun said Taiwan remained in close contact with the US and would keep tabs on the sale.
