The Supreme Court blocked an appeals court order that would have switched Missouri to a Republican-backed 2025 map, leaving the 2022 map in place for November’s election as voting has begun. That map has seven Republican-leaning and two Democratic-leaning seats.
The unsigned order had no noted dissents and said changing maps during an ongoing election could cause “electoral chaos.” Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe, who backed the 2025 map, said he was disappointed but that Missouri would follow the ruling. The 2025 map would have reduced Democratic-leaning seats from two to one.
Opponents also sought a November ballot initiative that would let voters decide whether to keep the redrawn map. The months-long legal dispute had left election officials and some voters uncertain about district boundaries and which candidates were running where.
