The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Friday that Missouri must use its 2022 congressional map in the 2026 midterms, rejecting a switch to a 2025 map after voting had begun. The existing map is projected to favor Republicans 6-2, versus 7-1 under the newer map.
The court said state law requires the 2022 map and warned that changing maps during an ongoing election would bring “electoral chaos.” It directed lower courts not to block the 2022 map or require Missouri to use the 2025 version.
The ruling followed a federal appeals panel’s order to use the 2025 map because it had been used in the August primary. Missouri’s Supreme Court had ruled the 2022 map lawful for the midterms; voters will decide in November whether to approve the 2025 map for future use.
