Donald Trump and Xi Jinping ended their three-day Washington summit without a major agreement to slow the US-China AI race. Their biggest policy announcement was a two-month extension of the trade truce; the visit emphasized ceremony and personal rapport.
Xi said the US and China had a responsibility to develop and manage AI for good and keep it under human control. China aims for next-generation smart terminals and AI agents to reach more than 90% penetration by 2030. Trump promoted calling AI “super intelligence” and said Xi seemed to like the term, but disclosed no substance from their discussions.
Ro Khanna, the top Democrat on the House select committee on China, argued Trump could have proposed US-China technical working groups to recommend AI safeguards and lab verification. Khanna said Xi might have agreed to at least some such groups. Brookings analyst Jonathan Czin also said the leaders appeared unwilling to slow AI development.
