Former CEO Jane Smith is no longer employed by Michigan’s Family First Credit Union after posting a family photo reportedly edited with ChatGPT to add “Lake America” sweaters. The post drew backlash in Canada. Trump ordered US agencies to use that name for Lake Ontario.
Smith told WJRT the family was “kind of poking fun” at the name change, but said it was not intended as a political statement. She apologized and said she understood why the post could offend. Family First also apologized to members and the community and named Jason Acosta interim successor.
The image was posted on September 11, the 25th anniversary of the attacks. Commenters noted that Halifax had hosted thousands of passengers diverted there when US airspace closed that day. Trump’s order directs US agencies to use “Lake America” but cannot rename Canada’s portion of Lake Ontario or require Canada or international bodies to adopt the name.
