Sunny Hostin said on “The View” she was the holdout juror in Daniel Rakowitz’s 1991 trial. After nine days, the jury unanimously found him not criminally responsible by reason of insanity; she disclosed it while discussing Lindsay Clancy’s 11-1 mistrial.
Rakowitz was accused of killing and dismembering 26-year-old dance student Monika Beerle in 1989. Hostin said she believed he was psychotic and did not mean to kill Beerle. In 2010, he was ordered to remain at the maximum-security Kirby Forensic Psychiatric Center on Ward’s Island.
Hostin said she agreed Lindsay Clancy was not criminally responsible by reason of insanity; Clancy’s defense argued postpartum psychosis. Juror Michael P. Desronvil, described as the holdout against acquittal, said he believed the physical evidence, witnesses and prosecution’s case showed Clancy knew what she was doing and planned.
