More than 55,000 Sudanese refugees have fled to Chad this year, with crossings at Adre and Tine now reaching 400 a day—about 20 times the rate in previous months, UNHCR says. Arrivals are outpacing available aid, the agency warns.
The transit centre in Tine is under severe pressure and hosts more than 4,300 people, many urgently needing shelter, water, sanitation and protection services. About 31,000 families lack adequate shelter, and most refugees live on less than half the minimum daily amount of water.
The UN has received only 20% of the $1.6bn needed for the response, leaving a $1.28bn shortfall. It warned that without more help, more Sudanese refugees will make the perilous journey to Europe; more than 14,100 arrived there last year, up 245% from 2024.
