Stanford confirmed AI was used in a dining-hall ad and said the image alteration and failure to disclose it violated university policy, according to eluna.ai. Student Billy Ramirez said the ad replaced him with a young Black woman; the banners were being removed.
The Stanford Review reported Monday that Stanford’s Residential & Dining Enterprises department used AI to modify an image of students in a dining hall. Ramirez told the paper he was at the far right in the 2024 original, which he said was taken by a Stanford photographer. The Review published a comparison showing a different person in his place and reported thinner faces and other changes to students’ appearances.
The school said it would add staff training and strengthen reviews of future materials. Ramirez told The Stanford Review that seeing his identity changed and being left out made him feel “silenced and erased” from a representation that was supposed to include him.
