Presley, 27, died Sept. 20 at a rehab facility, according to medical examiner records. His parents, Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, spent years helping him seek substance-abuse treatment, a source told PEOPLE; the official cause of death has been deferred.
A source told PEOPLE that the couple helped Presley pursue therapy, inpatient and outpatient rehab, and various homeopathic therapies, and hired more than one sober coach who were with him almost constantly. The source said he had a period of sobriety during winter, but his last year had become especially difficult.
Santa Monica police records indicate an overdose call at a Santa Monica-area facility on Sept. 20; dispatch also noted cardiac arrest. The medical examiner said the death remained under Santa Monica Police Department investigation and that information was limited. Presley had discussed the effect of medications on his mental health and said he underwent psychedelic drug treatment for addiction.
