New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill gave Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell until Friday to resign after an internal report found his conduct constituted sexual harassment and repeatedly violated state ethics rules. Caldwell’s lawyer disputed the findings; Sherrill cannot remove him unilaterally.
The 61-page report followed a months-long internal investigation. It says Caldwell tried to have a romantic partner promoted to a state job, made sexually suggestive comments to staff and ignored warnings. His lawyer, Thomas Calcagni, said the evidence did not support the findings.
Under the state constitution, Caldwell can leave office only by resignation or death, or be removed through impeachment by the Legislature. His lawyer did not say whether he would resign.
