Shanine Wright won BBC Radio Bristol's Volunteer Award for knife-crime work after her 16-year-old brother, Darrian Williams, was stabbed to death at Easton's Rawnsley Park on Valentine's Day 2024. She has since run school workshops and distributed bleed kits.
Wright has also worked alongside the Home Office. Volunteer Award judge Peaches Golding said Wright stood out for identifying a systemic reason behind the problem she wanted to tackle. Thirty-two finalists were shortlisted at The Playhouse Theatre in Weston-super-Mare on Thursday, and eight winners were announced.
Other winners included the Sam Polledri Foundation, which raised more than £250,000 for public defibrillators; Sam's mother said a girl survived a cardiac arrest after being directed to its first device. Operation Community Hamper said it helped 1,300 families at Christmas last year. The remaining awards went to seizure-alert dog Eddie, anti-discrimination campaigner Lyla, Athena Combat Club, community helper Michael Heale and park volunteer Natalie Donbavand.
