Greek media say six bodies were recovered from a collapsed building in Athens’ Plaka district after Friday’s explosion. Victims remain unidentified; an elderly couple was believed to live there, and four US citizens were reportedly staying in a holiday flat.
The building collapsed at around 7:30 am Friday, and the blast also sparked a fire. Investigators are focusing on a possible gas leak as the cause; residents had reported smelling gas before the blast. ERT News reported that recovery operations are progressing slowly because standing sections of wall could collapse and nearby buildings are also at risk.
