Australian hiker Jordan Yap, 30, remains missing after setting out alone on a 10-day trek in Peru’s remote Huayhuash range on Sept. 15. His family raised the alarm when he missed a Lima hotel check-in and a flight; a private mountain rescue team is searching.
A family friend said Yap was due back in Huaraz on Sept. 23 to collect his belongings, take an overnight bus to Lima and fly to Cusco the next day. The friend said a Samsung tag appeared to remain at the hostel. Yap’s father told ABC searchers had a “positive identification” of him on day two, but gave no further details about the encounter.
Peruvian mountain rescue group Socorro Andino Peruano is assisting. ABC reported the family was unsuccessful in seeking Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s assistance with a search involving Peruvian police. DFAT said it is providing consular assistance to the family but declined further comment, citing privacy obligations.
