Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns beat Min Woo Lee and Sungjae Im 1-up in Thursday’s four-ball, closing with par saves to secure the point. Their win helped the U.S. take a 3-2 lead over the International team after day one of the Presidents Cup at Medinah.
Justin Thomas and rookie Jackson Koivun beat Corey Conners and Nico Echavarria 4&3, while Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa defeated Ryan Fox and Adam Scott 3&2. The International team’s other points came from Tom and Si Woo Kim, who beat Patrick Cantlay and Chris Gotterup 3&2, and Hideki Matsuyama and Ryo Hisatsune, who beat Xander Schauffele and Cameron Young 3&1.
Thursday’s win was Scheffler and Burns’ first together in a Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup; they had been 0-3-1 as a pair in the events. Scheffler entered the week 3-5-1 in Presidents Cup matches and has never won a singles match in the event. The teams return Friday for five foursomes, or alternate-shot, matches.
