Texas’ Colin Simmons apologized for mimicking urination after a 16-yard sack of Tennessee QB Faizon Brandon; the celebration drew an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty. Coach Steve Sarkisian said it cannot happen again after Texas’ 20-17 win.
Simmons finished with five sacks as Texas recorded 10 overall. The penalty gave Tennessee a fresh set of downs instead of forcing a punt; the Volunteers moved beyond midfield but failed to score after an incomplete pass on fourth down.
Sarkisian said the team had previously stressed not reacting emotionally to the crowd, and that Simmons was taken out, addressed and returned to the game. Texas also had multiple false starts and holding penalties, plus two 15-yard penalties on Tennessee’s opening drive that helped the Vols reach field-goal range for their only first-half points.
