Russian ballistic missiles killed two people and injured six in Kyiv early Thursday, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Klitschko said one of those killed was in a maternity hospital parking lot; three of the injured were medical personnel, and two were in serious condition.
Debris fell in three districts. Klitschko said the maternity hospital’s facade and a nearby clinic were damaged, and part of a residence was destroyed. Kyiv’s military administration reported damage to a 16-story residential building and private homes. In Dniprovskyi district, debris landed in a private property’s yard; Klitschko said people might be trapped under rubble and urged residents to stay in shelters.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, attending the UN General Assembly in New York, said the strikes occurred because pressure on Moscow was insufficient and called for ballistic interceptors and sanctions against Russia and those helping it earn money. He said the attack came as he discussed the newly approved Lindsey Graham Russia sanctions law with U.S. lawmakers. Klitschko said attacks on Kyiv through most of Wednesday had killed two people and injured 45. Separately, Odesa’s military administration chief reported overnight damage to residences and medical and educational institutions, without further details.
