Russia is developing a 5.45mm cartridge for standard AK-12 rifles that splits into several projectiles in flight to target small drones. Reported tests found elements reaching drone batteries and electronics, but battlefield effectiveness remains unproven.
Pervy Tekhnichesky reported in April that Kalashnikov Concern had developed and tested the cartridge, with trials involving single shots and bursts. Military expert Yury Knutov said it is intended for troops who may encounter drones without access to specialized firearms.
The round is aimed at small aerial targets, not intended as a general replacement for ordinary rifle ammunition. Against people, body armor can reduce its penetration, while hitting an exposed area depends on accurate placement.
