Riverside police arrested the baby's mother, Astrid Nohemi Lopez Ramos, 26, on Sept. 17 on suspicion of child endangerment, more than a year after the newborn was found beside a dumpster in the rain on May 4, 2025. Bail was set at $35,000.
Police said reports of a crying baby led officers to an apartment-complex dumpster enclosure in the 3800 block of Jackson Street, where a resident had found the infant. The baby was uncovered in the rain, breathing and crying, with the umbilical cord attached. Authorities believed the child had been born only hours earlier. Paramedics took the baby to a hospital; the child's current condition was not immediately clear.
California allows a parent or legal guardian to surrender a baby within 72 hours of birth without questions. In Riverside County, newborns can be surrendered at most hospitals and fire stations, police said.
