The FDA classified a recall of more than 1.7 million pounds of light brown and powdered sugar as Class II; batches sold in eight states may contain wheat kernels. The agency says consumers should return affected packages to the place of purchase for a refund or dispose of them.
News Nation and Parade reported that the sugar was sold under the United, Crystal Sugar and Good & Gather brands, with affected consumer- and commercial-size packages bearing batch numbers MHD26223 through MHD26229. The products were sold in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas. United Sugar Producers and Refiners of Minneapolis initiated the voluntary recall on Aug. 19; the FDA announced it on Sept. 21.
The FDA's Class II designation applies when exposure may cause temporary or medically reversible health effects, or when the probability of serious adverse effects is remote. Wheat is one of nine major food allergens recognized by the FDA.
