Rhun ap Iorwerth’s independence advocacy puts governing role under scrutiny

BBC

Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth was criticised by Conservative Andrew RT Davies for attending an independence rally in Aberystwyth instead of governing. He says his government can work on services while discussing independence; service delivery will be his main test.

The Yes Cymru-organised rally brought thousands onto the streets of Aberystwyth and was the first attended by a first minister who explicitly supported independence. A fortnight earlier, ap Iorwerth appeared in Cardiff with Sinn Féin’s Michelle O’Neill and the SNP’s John Swinney at a gathering of nationalist leaders.

Polling broadly shows no more than a third of people support independence, although ap Iorwerth may see the events as reflecting a changing mood. The article says appearances like these may also help keep Plaid Cymru’s base engaged ahead of its conference in Llandudno next week.
