Echo, a rescued Marineland Canada dolphin, died weeks after arriving at Oceanogràfic València in Spain. The aquarium said she deteriorated rapidly, developed swallowing and breathing problems in her final hours and was moved to its medical pool.
Echo was one of four dolphins rescued from Marineland Canada. The aquarium said she arrived with serious vision problems and a medical history requiring individualized care and monitoring; a necropsy will be performed to try to establish the exact cause of death.
Marineland closed to the public in summer 2024, and its animals have been relocated. Oceanogràfic València said the other rescued animals were progressing favorably; the aquarium was still investigating the death of beluga Jelly Bean, another Marineland rescue. Three rescued belugas sent to Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium had also died by late September.
