Putin said Friday that proposals for a “so-called peace settlement” and for renewed Ukraine talks were on the table, but voiced doubts and said Russia would carefully consider its response to Ukrainian counter-attacks. He added that “anything was possible.”
Washington renewed its effort to end the war after negotiations had stalled for several months, but the latest attempt has made no tangible progress. Ukraine has repeatedly said it is prepared to accept a limited ceasefire, a position Russia has repeatedly denied; Putin portrayed Kyiv’s willingness as a reaction to Russian attacks.
Putin criticized Ukrainian attacks on Russia during last weekend’s parliamentary elections, saying Russia had been forced to respond. He ordered Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in late February 2022.
