The EU says it will condemn Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine at the G20 summit in Miami whether or not Vladimir Putin attends. The US has formally invited the Russian president to the gathering, which President Donald Trump will host.
The Kremlin said it was “grateful and appreciative” and would study the invitation. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington hoped Putin would accept, describing the summit as a chance to engage with Trump and other leaders. Putin last attended in person in Osaka in 2019 and joined remotely in 2020 and 2021.
Commission spokesperson Olof Gill said Russia was escalating attacks on Ukrainian civilians and described July and August as the deadliest months since the war began. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called normalising leaders who start wars “the wrong path.” Zelenskyy said Miami could offer a trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin, which Trump has backed but Putin has repeatedly declined; Ukraine would support it if the format is approved and an agreement is reached.
