Hunter Allen Combs, 12, died Monday, Sept. 21, after a vehicle struck him near MacCorkle Avenue and Rock Lake Drive in South Charleston, West Virginia. Police said surveillance footage showed no evidence the driver violated any laws.
Dunbar Middle School said its community was grieving and that grief counselors were available to students. Combs’ mother, Lisa Combs, started a fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses and described him as protective of his brothers.
Some residents told WSAZ the intersection is used by pedestrians and cyclists and raised concerns about its lighting and evening visibility. Mayor Frank Mullens said he believes the area is safer than in the past, when nearby buildings made it harder for drivers to see pedestrians.
