James Cobb, 41, and fiancée Suzanne Wages, 44, were killed when an Amtrak train struck their car in Theodore, Alabama, around 10:45 a.m. Thursday. Police said the car went around lowered crossing gates; both occupants were ejected.
Mobile Public Affairs Manager Blake Brown said the vehicle seemingly did not wait for the train and the crossing safety equipment was working normally, local TV stations WALA and WKRG reported. Amtrak had not immediately responded to People’s request for comment.
The intersection had seen another deadly crash in less than a year, WALA reported. In February, Brittany Williams, 31, and her 8-year-old daughter were killed when their car went around the crossing arms and an Amtrak train struck it.
