Two South African shootings killed at least 27 people: 17 at a tavern west of Johannesburg on Saturday night and 10 in Lwandle near Cape Town early Sunday, police said. Eleven people were injured in Lwandle; no arrests had been made in the Johannesburg attack.
Police said 13 men and four women were killed in the Johannesburg-area attack at about 9:30 p.m. Suspects allegedly fired on patrons inside and outside the tavern, searched some and took their cellphones before fleeing in two unidentified vehicles. Police said the suspects were reportedly armed with AK-47s and pistols; two vehicles were set alight during the incident.
In Lwandle, police said gunmen entered an entertainment venue that also sells braaied meat (shisanyama) at about 1:46 a.m. Five people died at the scene and five after being taken to medical facilities; 11 others were receiving treatment. Police opened murder and attempted-murder investigations. Victims’ identities are to be released after their next of kin are informed.
