A Vallejo police patrol car caught fire on westbound I-80 near Abernathy Road in Fairfield on Thursday after an electrical failure in a rear control module, police said. The officer was not injured; the department is reviewing the failure and circumstances.
The officer noticed smoke at the rear, pulled over and removed firearms and other items, police said. The fire prevented access to an extinguisher stored in the rear. Fairfield firefighters extinguished the blaze; no other injuries were reported. Road flares stored near the affected equipment also ignited, and the damaged vehicle was towed to Vallejo.
