A 32-year-old Pittsburgh man was arrested Sept. 24 on charges including criminal homicide after UPMC doctor Idris Evans died following a stabbing at his Edgewood home. Evans’ wife was also stabbed and hospitalized, according to a criminal complaint.
The complaint alleges the man broke into the home just after midnight and stabbed the couple with a kitchen knife while they slept. Evans’ wife told police she woke to the attack and said she had never met the man. She said Evans called him by his first name and called for their two children to go to a neighbor’s house.
The man told police Evans had invited him in and attacked him first; he said he then stabbed both Evans and his wife. Detectives found cuts on his hands but no stab wound on his back, despite his claim of being stabbed there, and police said he could not provide details to support his account. Evans was co-medical director of UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh’s pediatric transport team and an assistant professor of critical care medicine.
