Zoo Atlanta said giant pandas Ping Ping and Fu Shuang arrived at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Sunday morning. The pandas are on a 10-year loan and will spend about a month in quarantine before visitors can see them; officials have not set an opening date.
Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the loan during a three-day summit with President Trump in Washington. Xi described the panda-loan program as an example of “friendship between the Chinese and Americans.” Zoo Atlanta had been part of a panda agreement with China for more than 25 years before its previous pandas left in 2024.
China has long used panda loans as diplomatic goodwill gestures, with agreements sometimes allowed to lapse when tensions arise. The National Zoo and San Diego Zoo also received pandas from China in 2024.
