Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to address the U.N. General Assembly in New York Wednesday as officials from the warring countries held their first mediated talks since June, a day after President Donald Trump threatened Iran with “annihilation.”
U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff described the discussions as lengthy, said mediators shuttled between the sides and said they would continue their work. Separately, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Tuesday.
A June framework intended to kick-start talks on a broader peace agreement fell apart within weeks. The Trump administration’s economic pressure campaign, launched last month, has deepened Iran’s economic crisis and pushed up inflation, while Iranians report new electricity and gas shortages.
