Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said it was up to the United States to choose when the Iran war ends, adding that Tehran does not want to continue it. Asked in a Thursday Fox News interview whether the conflict could end by year-end, he said Washington must decide.
At the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday, Pezeshkian said Tehran would never surrender to U.S. pressure; the two sides remain far apart on ending the war. President Donald Trump said Tuesday he could “annihilate” Iran if there were no deal to end it, while also suggesting an agreement could come soon.
The war began February 28, when the United States and Israel attacked Iran; Tehran responded with strikes on Israel and Gulf states hosting U.S. bases. U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran and Israeli attacks on Lebanon have killed thousands and displaced millions. Trump has cited weakening Iran’s nuclear capabilities as an objective. Iran does not have nuclear weapons and denies seeking them; it says it has the right, as a party to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
