During the US-Iran war, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian denied that Tehran had sought to assassinate Donald Trump, telling reporters in New York that it had never been government policy, overtly or covertly. US officials have accused Iran of plotting to kill Trump.
The Justice Department announced federal charges in late 2024 over what it described as a thwarted Iranian plot to kill Trump before the presidential election. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly responded to Pezeshkian’s comments by condemning Iran’s record and saying Trump was working to prevent the country from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Separately, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran had presented the US, through mediators this week, with a proposal calling for Washington to meet unspecified conditions within seven days to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restart negotiations toward a “final deal.” The White House called discussions through mediators “positive and constructive.” Pezeshkian also said his latest in-person meeting with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei was about a month earlier and lasted roughly seven hours; he described Khamenei as healthy. Khamenei has not been seen publicly since the war began.
