Sir Peter Lampl says he moved to the United States last year, citing difficulty travelling around London by car as the decisive factor. He argues the city’s transport policies contribute to wealthy people leaving Britain, while acknowledging they are only part of the wider story.
Lampl says bike lanes, camera-policed low-traffic neighbourhoods and 20mph limits make cab journeys across London too slow for his work. He says he has tried and continues to use the Tube, but finds it difficult.
Lampl writes that nearly a third of the 350 people on the 2024 Sunday Times Rich List were no longer based in the UK. He founded the Sutton Trust and the Education Endowment Foundation, and says he put more than £100m of his own money into building them, raised a further £800m and was responsible for about 180 full-time graduate jobs.
