A special education teacher identified by his family as Kelly Matthews was shot multiple times at Highland Middle School in Hobbs, N.M., on Sept. 25. Police took a juvenile suspect into custody after a foot pursuit; Matthews underwent surgery and was reported stable.
Matthews’ daughter told KOAT he was shot in the stomach and hip and may have been grazed by another bullet. She said he was walking in the parking lot or between school buildings when he came across the suspect.
No students were injured, according to police and school officials. Police have not confirmed whether the suspect attends Highland Middle School; the motive remains unknown and the investigation is ongoing.
