PepsiCo to end production and warehousing at Cheverly plant after 143 layoffs

Moneywise

PepsiCo laid off 143 workers at its Cheverly, Maryland, bottling plant Sept. 14 and plans to end manufacturing and warehouse operations. It said sales and delivery jobs would not be affected, citing changes in consumer demand, technology and its operating network.

A letter to Maryland’s Department of Labor and Cheverly’s mayor said 98 of the affected workers are represented by Teamsters Local 639. Prince George’s County Council member Jolene Ivey said the aging factory faced power and water problems and that expensive upgrades contributed to the decision. A town official told NBC4 the facility generated roughly $200,000 a year for Cheverly.

The cuts follow other PepsiCo reductions: the company announced four bottling-plant closures in October 2024, two Orlando Frito-Lay plant closures affecting 500 workers in November 2025, and a California warehouse closure affecting nearly 250 in February 2026. In August 2026, it permanently laid off more than 100 people at its Columbia, South Carolina, sales building. The Street reported the latest layoffs were part of productivity efforts amid shifting demand and sales declines.
