Pennsylvania withdraws proposed health rules, plans a revised filing

Pennsylvania’s health department withdrew proposed rules late Friday, saying it would revise them and submit a new proposal. Critics said the rules could allow warrantless home entry; the proposal would have expanded the list of reportable diseases, infections and conditions.

Republican state Rep. Kathy Rapp said nearly 6,000 public comments were submitted and most opposed the proposal. She led an 85-member group that filed a 33-page complaint.

The department said the proposal would address evolving standards and expert guidance and help reduce the spread of diseases, infections and conditions. Democratic state Rep. and physician Arvind Venkat defended updating the rules, saying medicine and diseases had changed over two decades; he said Republicans were drawing extreme conclusions.
